Choose Havering!

As you decide on the next step on your career following graduation, consider a professional qualification in Local Government finance with Havering Council!

All of us use, and our families depend on local services. In the response to the global pandemic, local authorities stood tall. Across the Borough, from care homes to local business and residents, we were there; and now we will lead our communities out of the pandemic into better times.

Local authorities are incredibly complex and diverse organisations that provide a wide range of services. For this we need leaders, especially in finance where your expert skills will support delivery of services, benefiting our community.

Joining us as a Graduate Trainee will enable you to support the local community and shape a career that could see you become Director of Finance, or even Chief Executive of a local authority -  equipping you with a broad range of skills that would see you succeed in any environment.

About the role

The professional qualification will be delivered through the Chartered Institute of Public Finance : The CIPFA Professional Accountancy Qualification | CIPFA

From strategic planning, procurement and commissioning, to dealing with integrating services and implementing new delivery models, the syllabus and robust training delivery programme provides you with the best foundation and well-rounded knowledge to apply your technical and practical skills at all levels.

As a Havering Graduate Trainee, you will gain a grounding in local government finance and an appreciation of how front-line services operate within a financial environment. During the three year course, you will be supported through the professional qualification whilst gaining invaluable experience in core disciplines, of Financial Control, Financial Management, and Financial Strategy, and an appreciation of the differences between each of them! There will be specialist placements in Audit an Insurance and Pension and Treasury Management.

Once qualified, you will be awarded the globally recognised CPFA (Chartered Public Finance Accountant) designation and gaining the status as a multi-skilled finance professional, for both the public and corporate sectors.
